Shipments amounted to 89.76 million units, down from the 97.98 million in the same period a year ago, and also down on the 96.69 million units shipped in the first quarter of this year. This represents a drop of 8.4% on the year.
In line with current market conditions Gartner Dataquest also lowered its annual sales forecast from 500 million units to just 450 million, which includes a large stock overhang from last year, so the number of handsets produced will probably be even lower.
Nokia’s market share fell to 34.8% from 35.3% in the first quarter of this year. Motorola came second with 14.8% of the market, up on the 13.2% of last quarter. Ericsson regained its number three position from Siemens after its market share climbed to 8.3% from 6.8%. Siemens dropped to fourth with 7.9%, despite climbing from 6.9% of the market and Samsung held 6.9% of the market.
