Advent Networks will be providing the bandwidth and network services for the new system, while BroadQ is creating the software needed to turn the PS2 into a receiver for the service – having already released software that allows users to play DivX format movies on their PS2s.
Consumers are buying PS2s twice as fast as cable operators are deploying digital set-tops, claimed Geoff Tudor, CEO of Advent. The companies believe that interest in video on demand will be increased if consumers already have the hardware needed to access the services in their living rooms.
The system is being demonstrated at the moment at the Broadband Plus show in California, where Advent and BroadQ are showing off a streaming MPEG4 video running on a PS2.
