The announcement is the first development following DoCoMo’s purchase of a 16% stake in AT&T Wireless for $1 billion in 2000. Japan’s number one mobile operator has ambitious plans to build on its success with i-mode by rolling out the technology through its overseas partners.

AT&T has decided not to use the i-mode name. This, coupled with their licensing fee payment arrangement could strain relations between the two companies. It may also hinder the success of the new service.
