EU Commission promises to take action on mobile prices

The European Union Commissioner, Mario Monti, has promised to take action over the prices mobile phone operators charge for cross-border calls and for completing calls. The announcement follows the commission's investigation into international roaming prices, which showed mobile operators are charging excessive prices.

Mobile terminal rates are also of concern to the commission. These are fees charged by mobile operators for completing calls.

Wholesale rates are not visible to the consumer, which allows operators to charge excessive prices. Mr Monti confirmed that investigations are progressing, saying he hopes to announce the conclusions before the summer.
