Many suspected that Pierre Danon, currently head of BT Retail, was to succeed Sir Peter as BT’s chief executive, even before it was announced that he would vacate the position early. However, as Mr Danon has withdrawn himself from consideration, it looks like BT will look outside the company for a replacement.

According to the Financial Times, there are five non-BT faces in contention for the position: Mike Granger (ex-Energis); Gerry Murphy (Carlton’s CEO); Tony Ball (BSkyB’s CEO); Duncan Lewis (GTS’ president); and Lucy Woods (a vice president at WorldCom Europe).
