SAP expects to double the number of engineers over the next three years at its SAP Labs India facility, which it claims is its biggest development center outside its headquarters in Waldorf. SAP also maintains a sales and support organization in the same city, which handles around 400 customers, mainly SMEs.

SAP says its will start ramping up its recruitment efforts immediately, and hopes to increase the number of engineers to 2,000 by the end of this year. SAP will hire locally and has no plans to relocate any developers from Germany at this time.

SAP is just one of many Western IT companies expanding their facilities in the Indian subcontinent. Only last month Microsoft Corp said it is building a global product support service in Bangalore, as part of the company’s $400m investment in India. Microsoft is also planning a $100m campus for 300 staff in the neighboring city of Hyderabad. Meanwhile chip maker Intel Corp also recently announced plans to triple its headcount to 3,000 (at a cost of $100m) at its Bangalore development center over the next three years.
