The chip firm’s president and CEO Hector Ruiz traveled to Beijing last week to meet with government officials, including premier, Zeng Pei-Yan.

During the visit he announced plans for Advanced Micro Devices (China) Co Ltd. As a wholly owned foreign enterprise, the move will apparently allow AMD to conduct a broader range of business operations in the country.

Ruiz also revealed a $120,000 donation by the firm, half of which will go towards the China Youth Development Foundation and half of which will go to Tsinghua University.

Ruiz’ visit follows the launch last week of two partnerships with Chinese firms to develop appliances and devices based on AMD’s Alchemy and Geode product lines.

Last year, AMD struck a research and development joint venture agreement with Beijing-based China Basic Education Software Company Ltd (CBE), which is backed by firms associated with the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Beijing Normal University.
