The talks are currently at a preliminary stage and they still have a long way to go before signing a deal. However, if the merger is successful it would create the second largest mobile operator in the US.
Both companies have held unsuccessful talks with numerous other companies in the past. These talks would result in a deal that combines the companies, with VoiceStream becoming the dominant shareholder.
