The Wall Street Journal has reported that Lucent is planning to axe another 5000 jobs. The proposed cuts would be on top of the 5000 the company has already said will go by the end of the year. The report claims the job losses will come from back office processing jobs as the company strives to improve its "quote to cash" ratio.
A Lucent spokeswoman denied an earlier report that claimed the company was going to axe another 30% of its workforce. The spokeswoman said although more job cuts may be necessary, the total would not be as high as 15,000. No indication was given of when the measures will be announced.
