Janet Anderson, MP for Rossendale and Devon, who proposed the legislation is concerned over the number of accidents caused by drivers using a mobile phone while driving.
This shouldn’t be necessary, as it is illegal to drive with one hand off the wheel in the UK. However, passing additional legislation could draw attention to the dangers of using a phone while driving, encouraging drivers to think twice before picking up their phone.
It has recently been made illegal to drive whilst using a mobile phone without a hands free kit in New York and similar legislation has been proposed in other US states.
