Microsoft is planning to close down two mobile-phone manufacturing facilities in Beijing, China, laying off 9,000 jobs.
The factories were operated by Nokia before it was acquired by Microsoft.
Beijing Youth Daily cited a source familiar with the matter as saying that the Software giant is planning to transfer some of the manufacturing equipment to Vietnam. The company will complete the transfer process by March 2015.
The shutting down of the Beijing facility is a part of the company’s previously announced 18,000 job cuts, which is reportedly the largest in the company’s history.
Since buying Nokia, Microsoft has already shuttered several facilities and has laid off 25,000 employees to reduce costs.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced earlier that the company is bringing back its focus on cloud computing, productivity software and mobile devices.
After acquiring Nokia’s hardware division the company has also stopped the use of the Nokia brand, as its smartphones are now labelled Microsoft.
