Under terms of the deal, ChinaNet will deploy Inktomi’s market-leading network caching, content delivery and streaming media software in its Internet Data Centers located in Beijing, Shanghai, Guanghou and Xian, providing a flexible, scalable network architecture for reliable, high-speed delivery of broadband content and other value-added services.

As the leading backbone provider in China, ChinaNet spans more than 200 cities and enables Internet service providers to deliver revenue-generating services to consumers and enterprises. The deployment of Inktomi content networking technology will provide ChinaNet with a broadband-enabled media distribution infrastructure to support next-generation content distribution services, including broadband access, video on-demand, network games, interactive sports and news programming, and government information.

Inktomi network infrastructure technology delivers an intelligent network software layer that enables service providers and enterprises to scale their businesses and quickly bring to market advanced network services, said Ted Okazaki, vice president and general manager, Asia Pacific Operations at Inktomi. Inktomi is pleased to be working with ChinaNet on the build-out of its backbone network with an end-to-end infrastructure for reliable, high-performance broadband content distribution services.

International Data Corporation reports that the broadband market in Asia Pacific will grow from 4.5 million users in 2001 to 60 million by 2004, with the majority of growth taking place in Japan and China. ChinaNet is poised to deliver on this rapidly escalating demand for rich audio and video content by building what is expected to be the largest content delivery infrastructure in China.
