The customised wireless payment solution will be branded under the LinkPoint name and will be marketed throughout the US. LinkPoint is a leading point-of-service distributor servicing merchants and independent service organisations (ISOs). Delivery of the units will begin in the second half of 2001 in a pilot with rollout continuing over the next three years.

We are pleased to be working with LinkPoint as a partner. This is an excellent opportunity for Keycorp through LinkPoint to begin deploying its wireless terminals in the US, said Michael Thomes, CEO Keycorp. The US market represents enormous opportunity for wireless payment and mobile commerce devices.

The LinkPoint-branded K78 mobile terminal is a customised hand-held wireless terminal for point-of-sale transactions. It combines an EFTPOS unit, a DataTAC® modem and a printer into what is believed to be the world’s smallest fully integrated mobile EFTPOS terminal. DataTAC is a packet-switched network designed for wide-area wireless data communications network, operated in the US by Motient Corporation. The K78 mobile terminal also operates with CDPD (cellular digital packet data) networks and GSM mobile networks.
