Hirai declared Sony the victor due to the company’s impressive PS2 sales figures. Sony capitalised on its early launch and has now sold over 30 million PS2s. The Xbox and GameCube have sold 3.5 million and 4 million units respectively.
Sony also announced plans to blitz Microsoft and Nintendo on the games front. The company is to release over 400 software titles by the end of the year, including games such as Lara Croft Tomb Raider and Tekken 4.
Meanwhile Sony’s online gaming plans have taken another step closer to fruition with the announcement of the US release date of its online gaming network adaptor. The adaptor will allow gamers to connect to any ISP and will come with a start up disc that will include a variety of games demonstrations. The network adaptor will be released in the US on August 27. No official date was given for the adaptor’s launch on the European market.
