A number of charities recently presented to a panel representing thousands
of Centrica employees nationwide, who unanimously picked the ‘Breathing Life’
Partnership as their chosen charity for the year.
Cystic Fibrosis, which affects more than 7,500 babies, children and young
adults in the UK, attacks the lungs and digestive systems and makes breathing difficult. Currently there is no cure, but the good news is that doctors and scientists, many funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, have now identified the faulty gene which causes the disease.
By working together this year, Centrica employees will raise GBP150,000 towards the on going treatment of sufferers as well as continuing research
into conquering this disease said Centrica’s Chief Executive, Roy Gardner.
Sarah Guthrie from The Cystic Fibrosis Trust said, Sadly, the life expectancy
for people with this disease is only around 30 years. Sufferers and their families have to cope with this knowledge every day. It is hoped that
researchers will be able to repair or replace the faulty gene that has been
identified. With enough funds to support the programme, it could become like
asthma, something that can be lived with.
Centrica employees have planned a season by season programme of fund
raising events in every region of England as well as Scotland and Wales. This
includes mountain climbing, walks, bog snorkelling and giant sleepovers. They
hope to raise more than GBP150,000 for the charity which so urgently needs
funds.
