The security of the roaming network is only as good as that of the weakest operator, and mobile networks are susceptible to many of the same security threats as hard-wired networks. Implementing IPSec between roaming partners, logical separation of traffic for each corporate network and use of GTP stateful inspection can mitigate a significant number of threats on the roaming network.

The new NetScreen-500 GPRS device will target mobile network operators looking to address the lack of security inherent in the GTP protocol used between roaming partners. The company’s product line now includes a hardware accelerated GTP-aware stateful packet inspection firewall, GTP-aware traffic shaping features, and a VPN/VLAN tunnel hub.

The Sunnyvale, California-based company said that for business users relying on GPRS services for connecting to corporate resources, it has also added new filtering features. So-called Access Point Name filtering ensures only authorized users gain access to specific mobile networks as well as corporate resources that may be connected via those mobile networks.
