DoCoMo launched its FOMA 3G service in October of last year. It initially expected to have 1.38 million users by the end of March 2003, but it has attracted just 134,000 subscribers so far.
Its 3G service has been outshone by fast-selling camera-enabled phones, with which rival J-Phone has been successful. DoCoMo’s FOMA visual phones, which allow users to see each other, failed to win over a significant number of users. In addition, applications to download data such as video and music have been beset by problems.
