Ericsson tests IP compression technology

Ericsson has hosted a successful Robust Header Compression (ROHC) interoperability test in Sweden. ROHC is able to deliver 50% performance gains for IP based services on all 3G networks. It will improve spectrum efficiency and service quality for IP services including mobile Internet voice and video.

ROHC has been developed to increase efficiency over wireless links by compressing IP headers. The ROHC scheme reduces voice packet sizes by 75% for IPv6, while preserving robustness to common wireless link transmission errors.

The interoperability test was performed in conjunction with Nokia, Siemens/Roke Manor Research, Panasonic and Effnet. Effnet, an IP header compression developer, produced a study last month that shows that IP header compression could realize savings of $15 billion for network operators by 2005.
