Salo, Finland-based Benefon aims to be a leading provider of GSM and GPS-based telematics systems and the Ismap acquisition broadens its customer base to the whole consumer market. Ismap offers mobile operators, ISPs and handset makers middleware that displays map routes, and points of interest via the web, mobile phones and PDAs.

It also offers a system that it says will enable users to download smart maps, condensed by a factor of 64, over wireless networks.

Benefon COO Jukka Nieminen said the combination of the two companies will put it in a strong position to deliver location technology in a wide range of enterprise and consumer applications. Ismap’s customers include Vivendi Universal, Verizon, France Telecom and Compaq.
