Samsung has filed an appeal to the US Supreme Court requesting to re-examine the patent infringement lawsuit against Apple.
Earlier this month, the South Korean firm agreed to pay Apple $548m to settle a smartphone patent dispute.
The payment is part of a larger $1bn damages award that Apple was granted in 2012, even though it was reduced to $930m on appeal.
In its latest appeal, Samsung is asking the top court to consider a review of the verdict passed by a jury in the US District Court for the Northern District of California in 2014.
The company also argues that the Supreme Court must re-consider outdated patent laws and fix them.
The South Korean firm said in a statement, "Samsung is escalating this case because it believes that the way the laws were interpreted is not in line with modern times.
"If the current legal precedent stands, it could diminish innovation, stifle competition, pave the way for design patent troll litigation and negatively impact the economy and consumers."
Apple and Samsung are engaged in a patent war, with several pending cases against each other in about 10 countries.
