Uber boosts app integration as CMA shows support

News: Developers can now insert a Ride Request button into their own apps.

By Alexander Sword

Uber has announced an overhaul of its software and services as the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) criticised plans to increase regulation.

The controversial taxi app announced on its blog that it had created a "Ride Request" button that developers can add to their iPS or Android apps.

After registering the app on the Uber Developer Dashboard and installing the software development kit, developers will be able to place the button next to an address or an ‘intent to ride’ to instantly get a ride to the specified location.

In addition, Uber is revamping the user experience with trials of SPOT technology in Seattle. Drivers will carry beacons on their windscreens that can be set to different colours.

Uber users can specify a colour when hailing a ride, which the driver’s SPOT device will glow in when they arrive.

The updates come as Uber’s fate in the UK received a boost, when the CMA criticised proposals by TfL to further regulate Uber to bring it into line with regulation of taxi firms in London.

The CMA believed that the proposals, which included introducing a mandatory 5-minute period between confirming ride details and commencing the ride, would harm competition and consumers.
