CNET, quoting unnamed sources close to the matter, said chief executive Paul Otellini would make the announcement after market close on Tuesday, following the Labor Day long weekend in the US.

The chipmaker, the world’s largest, is expected to reduce its workforce in the coming year. In April, Otellini first announced a major overhaul of the Intel’s operations designed to streamline the company and make it more competitive. At the time, he said the planning of the overhaul would take place during the following three months.

Intel spokesperson Chuck Mulloy declined to comment on yesterday’s rumor.

We intend to report the results of our structural efficiency study sometime in the third quarter and are on track to do that, Mulloy said. However, we have not announced any plans at this stage and therefore won’t comment on any of the current speculation or previous speculation for this matter.

According to the report, Intel’s marketing staff will be particularly affected by the cuts.

Otellini made in clear in April that the company would not wait until the planning of the operational overhaul was complete before it took action.

We will restructure, resize and repurpose Intel Corp for where we think the business is going, he said in late April. Every part of Intel will be included in this. No stone will be left unturned or unlooked at.

Since then, Intel cut 1,000 management jobs across the company and in various regions, and sold its Xscale communications and applications chip business, which cut 1,400 jobs, as well as its telecommunications unit, eliminating a further 600 workers.
