Data capture company Intermec Technologies Corp requested the investigation, alleging Symbol had violated US unfair trade laws by importing handheld computers, components and communications cradles that Intermec claims infringe on its patents. Intermec also is suing Symbol for this alleged patent infringement.

Intermec asked the ITC to weigh in on the issue in an attempt to prevent Symbol from importing goods that it claims infringe on Intermec IP.

The ITC investigation involves three Intermec patents that cover pocket-sized and modular handheld computing devices, as well as recharging and data-exchange cradles.

Typically, the ITC takes about a year to complete an investigation.

Symbol and Intermec have a long and storied legal history that are centered on disputes over various patents, including barcode scanners, as well as wireless communications IP.
