The London-based vendor unveiled the cuts, which represent about 17% of total headcount, as part of a restructuring in which four new business units are to be created. They are: Softswitch (located in northern Europe); Wireless (central Europe); Optical and Access Networks (southern Europe); and Data Networks (North America).

There is continued speculation that Marconi might be snapped up by a foreign investor. Some of its execs will be at a major industry conference in China later this month, where they are expected to hold talks with prospective buyers.
