Net2Phone, which sells its VoiceLine VoIP service to broadband providers, is using the VeriSign Wireless IP Connect Service to enable its WiFi VoIP cellular users to receive and place calls also over cellular network.
The service works by letting mobile phones to register as IP devices when near a WiFi signal, which means cellular users can also make and receive cheap VoIP calls.
This new market trial will enable broadband operators to accelerate the deployment of the triple threat – voice, data and wireless services – for consumers, said VeriSign VP of next-generation services Tom Kershaw, in a statement.
VeriSign announced its Wireless IP Connect Service about a month ago, along with trials of several US universities. Net2Phone is the first commercial company to test out the service.
The Net2Phone trial is expected to run through the end of the year.
