While other companies have already launched services that allow customers to view their credit card statements and recent transactions, the newly launched Mint service is the first to allow the extra functionality of actually making bill payments.

Customers who take up the service receive a text message from Mint at around the same time as they receive their monthly postal statement. The text message includes the balance of the credit card and the minimum payment. Customers can then initiate a straightforward payment process by replying to the text message with details of how much they wish to pay off.

According to a survey commissioned by Mint, around 37% of people questioned said that they viewed bills as a hassle, and around 27% said they were too busy to pay in the usual ways.

By enabling people to simply send a text to get their balance and make a payment at any time of the day, our customers can manage their money easily – just like they would if they were arranging a night out with friends, said Jerry Toher, managing director of Mint.
