IBM had been seeking to fill the vacancy since November 2004 following the resignation of John Swainson, who left to become CEO of Computer Associates International Inc.

Borman had previously been in charge of IBM’s iSeries server business. His position is being filled by Mark Shearer, who becomes the fourth general manager of the iSeries division in as many years.

IBM’s software division generated sales of around $14 billion last year – largely around its Java-based WebSphere software stack. The division recently reported a 5% increase in third quarter sales to $3.6 billion.
