The New York-based Linux vendor will include Versora’s Progression Desktop with its new Xandros Desktop distribution, enabling users to transfer their individual Windows settings to the Linux desktop environment.

Versora’s Progression Desktop is designed to transfer user-defined settings for screen savers, wallpaper, sounds, keyboards and mice, and applications from one operating system to another.

Versions are available for migrating from Windows to Linux, as well as from one version of Windows to another. It is already available with Turbolinux Inc and Linspire Inc’s desktop Linux distributions and also supports distributions from Red Hat Inc, Novell Inc, Mandriva SA, and Ubuntu.

Santa Barbara, California-based Versora was formed in 2004 by a number of former Miramar Systems Inc executives after the PC migration specialist was snapped by CA Inc in March of that year. As well as the Progression Desktop, the company also offers Progression Web for migrating from Windows Internet Information Services to Apache on Linux or Mac OS X.

While Xandros launched its first foray into the Linux server market with the release of the Xandros Server Standard Edition in May, the company is best known for its Xandros Desktop, version 4 of which is due for release next week.

The latest version is scheduled to include new photo and music-management software, including iPod compatibility, as well as enhanced wireless support and an integrated security suite combining the Xandros Personal Firewall and AntiVirus software.
