The new engine is being implemented in the hope of facilitating access to a collection of research-based information on cancer, including types, treatment, prevention, clinical trials and research and funding information, from across all web sites of the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
NCI is the federal government’s principal agency for cancer research. Its web site was set up to disseminate this information to NCI’s constituents in an effort to encourage cancer sufferers to become more actively involved in their treatment and care.
Endeca said its ProFind application will replace an existing commercial search platform and will be installed as part of a phase sequence. It will be utilized to index documents and content on the Cancer.gov site and NCI’s other cancer-related web sites.
The goal of the deployment is to eventually offer users advanced search functionality to provide enhanced access to NCI’s online resources, and to build search capability for other online NCI products.
