The company will today announce that it has segmented its Windows software into two flavors, SecureZIP and PKZip. Previously, SecureZip was just the name of the RSA-based technology PKZip uses to encrypt Zip files.

The latest PKZip will allow password-based encryption, but only SecureZip can integrate with existing PKIs. Both have been upgraded to support more administrative features, making them more attractive to enterprises.

The software, which integrates with Outlook and Notes, now allows administrators to set and enforce compression and encryption policies across the desktops on their network, so users can avoid the thought and effort involved with doing it themselves.

The firm has also overhauled the interface to PKZip, which it identified as a weak point when compared to WinZip, which has the largest market share for Zip software. PKWare will also release versions of the software for non-Windows platforms.
