Perpendicular recording is the latest disk technology that bumps up densities by around 50% and lays down data bits or domains with the North-South magnetic axis perpendicularly to the platter rather than parallel to it.Seagate has already shipped notebook, enterprise and 1 or consumer drives featuring PR. Its rival Hitachi Ltd says it will follow suit with volume shipments of PR disk drives later this year.

Like the Seagate’s 500GB desktop drives, the new 7,200 rpm 750GB desktop drives features four platters. It carries an MSRP of $590, making it slightly cheaper on a per-GB basis than the $435 500GB drives.
