The Hamilton, Bermuda-based IT services provider will design, build and manage information systems to support patient care and services in eastern England as part of the NHS Local Service Provider scheme. The contract runs to 2013 and comes hot on the heels of a similar 1.10 billion pound ($1.89bn) contract covering the northeast region announced on December 8.
Under the terms of the eastern England contract, Accenture will build and manage a new patient record system that will offer access to electronic appointment booking and transmission of prescriptions from other providers. It will support approximately 9.5 million citizens served by 200,000 NHS staff in 1,500 general practices and 125 hospitals.
Accenture was selected for the contract from 99 companies that responded to the initial NHS tender in February 2003, of which 12 were short listed in August. Last month, Accenture’s outsourcing rival Computer Sciences Corp won a 10-year, 973 million pound ($1.7bn) regional service provider contract with the NHS covering the northwest and the West Midlands.
