There is significant financial and intellectual investment underway in Michigan to improve the IT capabilities of hospitals, health systems and physician practices – but these efforts are predominantly independent, said Daniel Loepp, CEO designate for Blue Cross. Savings can be realized, and the quality of health services improved, if we know where the potential for cooperation among health providers and payers exists, so we can work together.

The study will catalog the state’s electronic medical record databases, its hospital and physician web portals, the compatibility and connectivity of its business systems and its e-prescribing capabilities. It will build upon a similar study by Ann Arbor-based CyberMichigan, which outlined a Michigan Health Information Network vision in January this year that identified many current health-related IT initiatives throughout the state.
