Adobe said the advantage of the new capability is its ability to enable design engineering, technical publishing, and creative professionals to share their 3D designs and models with others within and beyond their own organization, regardless of whether they have CAD software themselves.

The company said that as well as encapsulating 3D designs in the PDF format, users can also edit lighting, add textures and materials, and create animations such as assembly and disassembly instructions. Those wishing to view the PDFs can do so with the free Adobe Reader product.

Adobe said that Renault group, Honda Racing F1 Team, Eaton Corporation, Bradrock Industries, and Atrus Inc are among those testing Acrobat 3D for document-based collaboration processes that require visualization of 3D CAD models.
