With companies required to keep emails for specific periods of time depending on the sector they operate in, archiving has become a requirement in the market, with both filtering service providers, like MessageLabs and Postini, and appliance vendors like MailFrontier moving to address via partnerships.

Equally, archiving specialists such as Rutherford, New Jersey-based AXS-One and Zantaz see opportunities in the space and seek alliances with filtering vendors to exploit them.

Palo Alto, California-based MailFrontier, which is in the process of being acquired by low-end firewall vendor SonicWall Inc, has as its flagship product the MailFrontier Gateway, which has both Linux- and Windows-based versions and sells into SMB and enterprise sectors, though the former is clearly its main focus.

The Gateway will now be available with AXS-One’s Compliance Platform software pre-installed on it, which the two companies say will enable customers to manage growing volumes of disparate electronic records, including e-mail and instant messages, from initial capture and indexing through archiving, retention, search and ultimate destruction.

This, they said in a joint statement, helps address corporate governance, legal discovery and regulatory compliance while enhancing operational efficiency.
