Novell sponsors open source IPsec project

Novell Inc has announced that it is to sponsor the Openswan open source project to create an implementation of the IP security standard for the Linux operating system.

The Waltham, Massachusetts-based company also announced that its BorderManager 3.8 firewall and virtual private networking software has been certified with the latest IPsec certification from ICSA Labs.

Based on the FreeS/WAN codebase started in 1998, Openswan is already running on tens of thousands of Linux servers worldwide according to Novell, and will benefit not only from its sponsorship but also from contributions to its development.

Novell’s sponsorship of Openswan allows for the continued development and maintenance of the project and lets us offer new services, said Ken Bantoft, Openswan product manager.
