However, with the new application from the search engine giant stepping into the territory of eBay’s very own PayPal, many onlookers have described the e- auctioneer’s move as an attempt to protect its own.
In fact, the shunning of Google Checkout is only the latest in a long line of payment services that eBay has rejected. According to Digital Trends News, Netpay, Nochex and BillPay are amongst rival services not supported by eBay.
The Press Association suggests that the online auctioneer is wary that Google’s new payment system will usurp its own because it is faster, cheaper and easier to use than eBay’s PayPal.
Sellers caught offering Google Checkout to buyers on eBay will have their listings removed, forfeit their fees or have their entire account suspended, the PA reports.
However industry analysts have warned that such a tactic could backfire on eBay, as it might drive customers to Google’s rival auction site.
