Sony spends on chip plants

Sony said yesterday that it will invest around JPY120bn ($1.14bn) in the second phase of its drive to establish production lines for 65 nanometer process chips.

The money will be spread across Sony’s own Fab2 in Isahaya, Nagasaki Prefecture, IBM’s East Fishkill Fab in New York, and Toshiba’s factory in Oita Prefecture.

Sony expects pilot production to begin in first half of next year. Chip vendor’s are just beginning to look forward to the advent of 65 nanometer production, even as a migration to 90 nanometer production begins in earnest this year.
