The co-founder of the world’s largest software company hung out with rock band U2’s front man Bono in a Seattle hotel room after a concert in the northwest US city last weekend. Bono is also reported to have been a guest at Gates’ home in the city. Gates admits to being a devout U2 fan: I was one of 20,000 screaming fans, he told the press.

But its unlikely the pair bonded by discussing new features in Microsoft’s next generation operating system (codenamed Longhorn) or the merits of moving corporate servers and PCs from 32-bit to 64-bit machines.

Both, however, share one thing in common – their philanthropic activates. Bono is a staunch campaigner of third-world development and debt relief. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has also forked out over $4bn to help in the fight against malaria and AIDS in developing nations.

We’re big believers that more needs to be done in developing countries, Gates reportedly said.
