The license from the Australian Communications and Media Authority is expected to boost the RFID industry Down Under, since it means 4W RFID readers would be able to read RFID tags from about twice the distance of lower-powered, 1W readers.

The only group registered to issue the license, GS1 Australia, which was known as EAN Australia until it changed its name earlier this week, announced the news at a conference yesterday.

Companies in Australia now can apply to use GS1’s license to use 4W RFID readers within the 920MHz to 925MHz frequency range.

In order to demonstrate that RFID readers at this range do not interfere with adjacent users, GS1 initially would maintain a database of each company’s site that has registered to use a 4W reader.
