Gerhard Eschelbeck, CTO and VP of engineering at the Redwood Shores, California-based company, carries out an annual survey among customers of its scanning service, and this year studied 21 million-critical vulnerabilities from 32 million live scans. His Laws of Vulnerability report indicates that only one in nearly 20,000 critical vulnerabilities was caused by a wireless device.
One reason for this is that WLAN kit enjoys the luxury of having had security designed into it from the outset. We compare servers and workstations with wireless access points, and of course, the APs are more recent editions to corporate networks, with a lot of effort having gone into securing them when they were rolled out, Eschelbeck said. Our data suggests that the concern about WLAN security is overrated.
