Despite fears that a company best known for its high-end handsets would not do well in developing markets, he said that for the combined mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan markets, Nokia now has an estimated device market share of well over 30%.

Ollila said: China currently has 380 million mobile subscribers. We believe that by 2010, China will have added another 250 million mobile subscribers, making it the single largest mobile market in the world. He said Nokia had invested $2.2bn in China, employed nearly 6,000 staff across Greater China, and had created over 30,000 jobs in related industries.

In the first nine months, Nokia sales in Greater China exceeded 2.7bn euros ($3.3bn) and in the same period exports were 1.9bn euros ($2.3bn).

David Ho, president of Nokia China, said mobile traffic represents 60% of total telecoms traffic in mainland China, and data services already make up over 20% of revenue for mobile operators.
