The Commission is said to be unhappy with the current copyright system because it is too complicated and expensive. People who want to offer music over the internet have to secure licensing rights from 25 countries in the European Union, each of which has their own separate set of copyright laws that have to be met.

The Commission believes that this lengthy process has led to a drop in music sales, allowing the region to slip some way behind the US.

According to reports, the organization is pushing for the introduction of a single, European-wide license that it claims will simplify the EU’s rules and make it cheaper for wannabe online music providers to enter the business.

The license would also mean that national collecting agencies could focus on managing the copyright licensing of performers throughout the EU.
