The latest release, FirstClass 8, evolves the platform with a wealth of new features in instant messaging (IM) and presence management, directory services (including single sign-on), security, performance tuning, management, collaboration, and customization.

A useful new feature is the Explorer ActiveX plug-in which makes FirstClass a client in Microsoft Internet Explorer.

The software is offered in three separate editions; for business, education, and services providers.

Officials at Waterloo, Ontario-based Open Text are calling version 8 the biggest release in the 15 year history of FirstClass.

The FirstClass Division of Open Text was formed in 1989 and has amassed over eight million users across more than 10,000 companies worldwide.

FirstClass 8, freely available to customers holding FirstClass support and maintenance contracts, runs on Windows, Apple Mac, and Linux.
