The effects will be felt by people who need to, for example, switch web hosts or get a new site live quickly. This means that .com and .net come into line with newer domains such as .info and .biz, which have been near-real-time since launch.
The biggest benefit is not having to wait potentially up to 18 hours for changes made by a registrar to be reflected, VeriSign said on its web site. If a critical change to a domain is required, that change will now be visible in DNS nearly immediately.
These rapid update capabilities in the DNS have made domains like .biz popular with spammers, who often need to move their web sites to new ISPs at short notice. VeriSign’s change goes into effect September 8.
