The regulatory agency wants to determine whether to conduct an official enquiry on the basis of the formats’ licensing terms potentially violating EU competition laws.
The issue centers around how the firms license their products to manufacturers to produce the DVD hardware, as well as policies for firms who want to produce the new discs.
Both formats boast better picture and sound quality than current DVD’s offer and have already been released in the US – HD DVD in April and Blu-ray in June.
