According to an Evans Data survey, backed by BEA Systems Inc, though, developers foresee significant barriers to widespread implementation of open source in SOAs.

Evans found 75% of developers are building or planning SOAs, with 60% using open source software.

The analyst said perceived barriers to widespread adoption of open source in SOA are a lack of support and maintenance services, irregular updates, unpredictable total cost of ownership and intellectual property concerns.

Web services, meanwhile, were cited as the most useful SOA technologies, used by 28% of developers, followed by Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) and BPEL for Java (BPELJ), on18%, and Apache Software Foundation’s implementation of the BEA’s Beehive framework, also on 18%.
