The OSSRC has been formed by SourceFire Inc, which was founded by Snort creator, Martin Roesch, and recently agreed to be acquired by Check Point Technologies Ltd, as well as test Snort Rule site Bleeding Snort.

The consortium is co-chaired by Roesch along with Bleeding Snort’s Matt Jonkman, while Alan Shimel, chief strategy officer with Latis Networks Inc, which operates as StillSecure, has been elected as a board member, alongside Jeremy Hewlett and Erik Fichtner, representatives of the Snort community.

The OSRCC is designed to bring together Snort users and integrators to establish metrics and standards for Snort Rules development, and to ensure the continuous development of Snort Rule sets licensed under the General Public License.
