Cyota Inc, Internet Identity and MarkMonitor Inc are the latest companies to provide phishing Web site data for the Microsoft Phishing Filter and SmartScreen Technology services, which aim to help users avoid phishing attacks. The Phishing Filter, for example, is an online warning and protection system for phishing attacks in browsers.

The information would be used in MSN, Windows Live and Microsoft’s Web browser, as well as various other Microsoft products.

Phishing often involves the use of fake Web sites that resemble legitimate businesses or organizations that trick victims into disclosing personal or financial information that can then be used in illegal or sinister ways. Some phishing sites last just a few hours or days before they are shut down.

Previously, Microsoft had partnered with WholeSecurity to develop a list of known phishing Web sites.
