Atlanta, Georgia-based ISS is paying 26m euros ($33.1m) for privately held Kassel, Germany-based Cobion, adding content analysis software and a content filtering database of 20 million categorized URLs to its portfolio.

ISS said the acquisition will enable it to deliver content filtering as a standalone product, as well as integrating the Cobion functionality with its Proventia combined intrusion-detection and prevention appliance.

Content security will be added to the Proventia M all-in-one appliances in the second quarter of 2004, combining content filtering and anti-spam with the existing firewall, anti-virus, intrusion prevention and virtual private networking.

Proventia C, a best-of-breed content appliance based on the Cobion OrangeBox software, is also scheduled for release in the second quarter.

The announcement of the acquisition came as ISS said it expects to report revenue for its fourth quarter near or above its stated guidance of $66m. However, the company also noted that it expects pro forma net income, excluding the after-tax impact of $1.3m in acquisition-related expenses, to be below the guidance of between $0.13 and $0.17 per share.
